Today we will look at how Hand2Note 4.1 works with databases - and why delve into this topic at all.

The database is the foundation of all your analytics. It stores the played hands, opponent statistics, and analysis results. Without it, Hand2Note will not be able to show the HUD or build a report.

Dividing the databases helps to put things in order: you can create a separate database for each limit, poker room, student, or game format. This makes the work faster, more convenient and safer.

Let's figure out how to create, switch, transfer, delete databases and make backups - all in simple steps and with examples.

Creating and switching databases

Database management is located in the Settings of Hand2Note → Database. To create a new database, follow these steps:

  • Open Hand2Note and go to Settings → Database.
  • Click the "Create database..." button.
  • Enter a convenient name for the new database.
  • Click "Ok". Hand2Note will create a new database and make it the main one.

Thus, you have created an absolutely clean database. Please note that after creating a new database, old distributions are not transferred automatically - they can be imported if necessary (see the sections below).

To switch between existing databases, also use the Settings menu. A list of available databases will appear in it. Select the desired one and just click on it, Hand2Note activates the selected database. After selecting the database, the HUD and reports will then work with the selected database. The next time you start Hand2Note, it usually opens the last activated database.

Changing the path and transferring the database

Sometimes it is necessary to move the database to another disk (for example, from HDD to SSD) or save it on external media. This is done through the same settings. Procedure of actions:

  • Open Settings → Database.
  • Click "Open Folder" (1) to open the current folder with the database files (by default %AppData%\Roaming\Hand2Note\DataBases).
  • Copy all the files from this folder to the desired new location on the disk (for example, on an SSD or another local drive).
  • Go back to Settings → Database and click "Edit Folder" (2). Specify the path to the folder where you copied the files.

When transferring the database, it is important to keep the complete folder structure - do not change the names of files and folders inside the database. The new storage should have enough free space: Hand2Note databases can take up tens of gigabytes with a large volume of distributions.

It is not recommended to place the database on network or cloud drives, as an unstable connection can lead to data corruption.

It is preferable to use a local SSD, and besides, Hand2Note is sensitive to incorrect paths: Cyrillic letters cannot be used in the names of startup and database folders.

Deleting and backing up

If the database is no longer needed, you can delete it directly from Hand2Note. Open Settings → Database, when you hover your mouse over an inactive database, the trash icon will appear, clicking on which you will delete the database. This will delete all database files (by default in %AppData%\Roaming\Hand2Note\DataBases\...).

Attention: before deleting, make sure that you really want to get rid of the data - it is impossible to restore distributions from the database after deletion. If you do not plan to use the database further, I recommend making a copy of it first and then deleting it.

To back up the database, simply copy the folder with the database files to a secure location, on an external disk, network resource, or cloud. This is the most reliable method: in case of a PC failure or Windows reinstallation, you can restore the database by copying it back.

Optimization and technical advice

Large and overloaded databases can slow down Hand2Note. To avoid lags, follow these recommendations:

Create a separate database for cash games, and a second database for tournaments. Then Hand2Note will build stats faster, and the HUD will load without unnecessary load.

Perform maintenance periodically. Hand2Note has a maintenance - Database -> Begin Database maintenance tool. It removes unused or corrupted stats from the configuration.

Be sure to keep the databases on a fast SSD drive. The access and read/write time on an SSD is significantly higher than on an HDD, especially with a large number of files. Transferring the database to an SSD often gives a noticeable increase in the speed of loading HUDs and reports.

If you are coaching players, use multiple databases for each individual student. This makes it easier to work with individual reports and you won't worry about "mixing" the distributions of different sessions.

Conclusion

Proper organization and maintenance of Hand2Note 4.1 databases significantly increase the efficiency of game analysis and reduce the load on Hand2Note and speed up its work. Regular backups and database maintenance will keep your distributions safe and sound.
