Hand2Note stores all its settings and data in separate folders. When you reinstall the system, transfer to a new PC, or change the disk, it's important to copy these folders correctly to avoid losing HUDs, popups, user statistics, and notes. If you don't, your usual HUD may not appear at startup, custom statistics will be gone, and the database will be empty.

For security reasons, I recommend creating a backup of the configuration ahead of time. This will allow you to easily restore them later. Without a good backup, you run the risk of getting a "bare" Hand2Note with no HUDs/popups or stats.

The folder structure in Hand2Note 4.1

Hand2Note 4.1 has multiple directories for different types of information. In a standard installation on Windows, they are organized as follows:

The Config folder is located inside the program directory, usually at C:\Program Files\Hand2Note\Config. It stores all the user settings, including HUD profiles, HUD/popup templates, user stats definitions, filter settings, report configuration files, and badges.

The Notes folder is also located in the program directory (C:\Program Files\Hand2Note\Notes)and contains all the notes on players. There is also a subfolder called ColorMarkers where custom color markers are stored.

By default, the database is stored in the %APPDATA%\Roaming\Hand2Note directory. This folder contains real hands, cached stats, and indexes. Hand2Note imports hand histories from the poker client and stores them here.

Database migration

Before starting the transfer process, please ensure that Hand2Note is closed. Also, make sure that there are no active processes related to Hand2note.exe in the Task Manager. If these conditions are not met, the files may become blocked and the transfer may not complete successfully. Additionally, check that the disk where the database is located is accessible and free of errors.

To move the database to a different disk or computer, you will need to copy the entire %APPDATA%\Roaming\Hand2Note folder to the desired location. Here are the steps to follow:

1. In Hand2Note, navigate to Configuration (1) and select Database (2).

2. Click on Open Folder (3) to access the current database folder.

3. Close Hand2Note and copy all its contents, including all files and subfolders, to the new location. This can be done by copying the folder to a different drive or PC, or by placing it in the AppData folder on the new computer.

After copying, run Hand2Note again. In the Configuration (1) → Database (2) section, make sure that the database path points to the new folder. If it does not match what you have copied, click on the "Change Folder" (4) button and select the correct directory. Hand2Note will then restart.

After this, Hand2Note should start working with the old database. The size of the folder in the new location should be the same as the old one. Open the main window - the number of hands and charts displayed should be the same as before.

Transferring settings, HUD, and custom stats

To transfer settings, HUD (Heads-Up Display), and custom stats, you can use two methods: manual and automatic. I recommend using the built-in export method.

Manual method: Close Hand2Note and navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Hand2Note 4.1\Config (or wherever you have installed it) in Windows Explorer. Copy the entire folder along with all its contents to a new location.

Through the built-in export feature, you can easily transfer your Hand2Note configuration to a new device. First, open the Configuration menu and select the Export Config option (1). Then, choose a folder where you want to save the file (*.h2nconfig). After that, on the new device, open the same Configuration menu and use the Import Config option (3). Specify the saved file and all your settings will be transferred automatically.

Transferring notes and color labels

The Notes file stores all the comments you have made on the players. The Notes folder contains the notes themselves plus a ColorMarkers subfolder with your color labels.

If you are copying manually: just copy the entire Notes directory from the old directory to the new directory.

If you are copying your notes using the built-in export feature:

1. Go to the "Configuration" menu and select "Export Notes" (2).

2. Create an exported notes file with the *.h2nnotes extension.

3. On the new computer, open the "Import Notes" (4) menu in the "Configuration".

4. Specify the file that you created in step 2.

5. This will restore all your recordings automatically.

Integrity check and testing

Note: Make sure to check the integrity of your data after transferring the notes. Run Hand2Note on the new device and verify that everything works correctly.

HUD and popups. Open the poker table (real or in hand view mode) and check if your HUD is displayed. Try to open several popups – they should load without errors.

Reports and filters. Check that your saved reports and filters are visible and display the data correctly in the Reports section. Open several existing reports to confirm that the statistics are accurate.

Custom statistics. Create a simple report, such as VPIP/PFR, to verify that user statistics are calculated correctly.

Database size. Ensure that the size of the database folder matches the expected size, as this may affect the completeness of the copy operation.

Player notes. Verify that player notes and tags displayed in the notes panel are still present after clicking on a player in the lobby or report.

Troubleshooting

If something has gone wrong, such as the HUD or statistics not appearing, check that all folders copied without errors and restart the program. It may also be helpful to clear statistics and allow Hand2Note to rebuild them in a fresh way (Database > Clean & Rebuild Statistics).

The wrong database path. After copying the files, you might have forgotten to change the path in the settings. If Hand2Note doesn't see the data, please check the path in Configuration → Database. Install it in the folder where you copied the h2ndb files.

Missing configuration files. Sometimes, people forget to copy certain files in the Config\Stats or Config\Badges folders, which can cause some HUDs to not show stats. Always copy the entire Config folder, not just certain subfolders.

Running the program while copying. If you make a manual copy while Hand2Note is running, there may be issues with the files. The database data or settings may get confused, causing broken statistics and import errors. Before transferring files manually, close Hand2Note using the Task Manager.

Incompatible versions. The most common mistake people make when trying to transfer their Hand2Note configuration from one version to another is to try and do it manually. This is not possible.

If you are upgrading from Hand2Note version 3 to version 4.1, it is recommended that you follow the official guide provided by Hand2Note.

Conclusion

When transferring Hand2Note from one computer or disk to another, it is not enough to simply copy the database. You need to transfer all components, including the database with distributions, the configuration with HUDs/popups/stats, and the notes with tags. Following the correct procedure will ensure that you receive an exact copy of your settings in the new location. Your HUDs, popups, reports, and filters will all continue to function as they did before. To avoid losing data, it is a good idea to make periodic backups, especially after adding new HUDs or creating new notes. This way, if something goes wrong or you need to relocate, you can quickly restore everything and continue using Hand2Note without any issues.
