Poker coach Vanja breaks down a systematic framework for river decisions. Learn the four-step thought process pros use: understand theoretical defaults, identify opponent mistakes, and make exploitative adjustments. Master blocker betting, value/bluff ratios, and combo counting.
River is the most costly street to make mistakes. Use a structured framework to identify natural bluffs and exploit opponents.
The 4-Step River Framework:
- Start with theory defaults - Always know what should happen in GTO before making exploits. Understanding baseline helps identify opponent deviations.
- Identify opponent mistakes - Ask if they're folding too much, calling too much, or not raising enough. Pattern recognition reveals exploitable tendencies.
- Natural bluff heuristic - When few natural bluffs exist (no busted draws), opponents typically under-bluff. Overfold in these spots against most players.
- Pure exploitation principle - If opponent overfolds, bluff everything. If they overcall, never bluff. Most players are so unbalanced you can make pure decisions.
- Block sizing with nutted hands - Against players who don't raise enough, never put strong hands in small bet sizing. Always use larger sizes to maximize value.
- Combo counting in real-time - Count suited hands (3 combos), offsuit hands (9 combos), and pairs (3-6 combos) to calculate precise calling ranges.
- Solver as understanding tool - Don't use solver to check if you made the right play. Use it to understand why certain strategies work and spot opponent deviations.
