This advanced strategy guide teaches you how to exploit opponents on the river by understanding GTO principles. Learn when to call with bluff catchers, when opponents over-bluff or under-bluff, and how to adjust your strategy for maximum EV against different player types.

GTO river theory shows calling all bluff catchers is correct when opponents over-bluff even slightly. Fold all when they under-bluff.

Mastering River Theory:

  • When facing pot-sized all-in, you need 33% equity to break even. GTO opponents bluff 33% and value bet 67%
  • Bluff catchers become profitable calls when opponents over-bluff even slightly. Call all bluff catchers if villain bluffs 38% instead of 33%
  • Against under-bluffers, fold all bluff catchers. Most low-stakes players under-bluff big river bets
  • Your adjustments don't lose EV if opponent plays perfect GTO, making exploits risk-free against balanced players
  • Players often reach river with too many strong hands (like Jack-x) because they don't check-raise enough earlier
  • Look for spots where opponents have off-suit high cards they'll over-bluff with after checking turn
  • Against aggressive studied players, find hero calls in spots where they over-bluff with weak holdings that can't win at showdown
